United States ambassador, Mr Earl Miller, has lauded Botswana Association for Psychological Rehabilitation (BAPR) for its efforts of supporting orphans and vulnerable children.
When handing over a refurbished youth centre housed under the BAPR on May 26, he said the place would be used to advance the physical and emotional development of those who needed it most.
The centre named: Ko Lwapeng would benefit about 120 orphans and vulnerable children and adolescents.
“The space will provide the aforementioned people with a conducive environment to socialise, play and learn in order to take control of their health,” he said.
BAPR supported orphans and vulnerable children and people living with HIV/AIDS and their families with special emphasis on teens and those with mental illness.
Mr Miller said the embassy funded BAPR through the Presidents’ Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPAR) to cover costs of renovation materials for the building.
The Lobatse Brigade provided all labour and expertise for the renovation while the local businesses, through their corporate responsibility also played their part.
He also said through robust partnerships and dedicated communities they will push for the success of the project.
In his welcome remarks, BAPR director, Dr Paul Sidandi said the project was done in partnership with the community through volunteers and business communities.
He said the project began in 2014 with small works being done on the building to make it safe and secure for BAPR children as it was not habitable.
He mentioned that, the project was financed through Self-help Fund through the American Embassy and got approved in August 2015 and major construction commenced on October 2015.
Mr Sidandi also extended his gratitude to Lobatse Brigade for their assistance as the project allowed them to gain practical work of what they were learning at school.
He added that, they received PEPFAR grant at the tune of US$13,100 (close to P150 000) to renovate a two storey building on the property to be used for early childhood development and teen club.
He said through PEPFAR, the association has been given an extra fund to purchase more equipment and furniture for the centre.
In his closing remarks, Kgosi Pepukani Makambe from Motswedi/Thema kgotla said it is through community efforts such as BAPR that distinguished people reach different opportunities and grow to be successful. Ends
