Khama hails Mozambique

President Lt Gen. Dr. Seretse Khama Ian Khama has acknowledged the government and people  of  Mozambique for maintaining  admirable political stability since the time of independence.

Addressing members of the media in Songo Villa, during his last leg of the state visit in Mozambique on Wednesday,  President Khama commended the Mozambican administration as well as its predecessors for the tenacity and industrious efforts towards building a united, peaceful and prosperous nation.

He said the holding of successive democratic elections in Mozambique demonstrated the country’s firm commitment in the consolidating a strong democratic culture and dispensation which would afford equal opportunities for the Mozambican people.

Mozambique, he said had over the years made remarkable socio economic developments and Botswana was pleased to have been part of the collective efforts that contributed towards the consolidation of peace and stability in Mozambique in the 1990’s that ushered in the period of economic growth.

He however raised a concern towards certain reports of regarding security challenges of instability in some parts of  Mozambique that threatens the hard earned peace and tranquility that the country’s forefathers struggled for years to achieve.

As the SADC chairperson, President Khama stated that the SADC region is highly against any efforts geared towards cause political instability in the region and will highly not tolerate such efforts.

Meanwhile, With regard to his tour of the Cahora Bassa hydroelectric site, President Khama commended Mozambique for assisting with the supply of electricity to a number of SADC countries something that he said Botswana was in the process of investing on.

He said the Cahora Bassa site tour had been an eye opener in many factors involving energy generation and supply.

The tour of the hydroelectric site, he said came at a time when government was also aiming at being counted among regional energy producing power houses. ENDS
