Matebejana Black Peril ascend to first division

16 May 2016

Matebejana and Black Peril have been promoted to the First Division South league. The two teams secured themselves spaces after defeating other teams during the play-offs held in Jwaneng over the weekend. The final decisive games, which were played concurrently on Sunday, were hard to predict as both teams had already accumulated six points each from the previous games, with Black Peril having an advantage of goal difference.

Breathing hard on their necks was Kanye United with five points, followed by Broadhurst United with four. Mokatse Mountain Birds was never a threat as they only got a single point for their draw against Kanye United on Saturday.

Pitted against Kanye United in the final game, Black Peril proved to be a tough nut to crack as they denied their opponents access to the goal post despite playing good football, rendering the scoreboard clear at recess. The game continued with the same momentum in the second stanza, but it was only in the dying minutes of the game that the Tlokweng lads registered a goal.

On the other side, Broadhurst United’s first goal in the first half nearly sent panic attacks to Matebejana fans. Nonetheless, their celebration was short-lived as the Mogoditshane side came with guns blazing scoring one goal after another. Like a wounded lion, Matebejana was only stopped by the final whistle having registered four goals to be officially at the top of the log.

Matebejana coach Onkemetse Masena said he was glad that finally their efforts had paid off, after working hard to enter the first division league since the 2012/2013 season. He said even though they had not been successful, they kept pushing and it was pleasing that this time they managed to achieve that what they had been longing for.

He said they were ready for the bigger league, even though it was a challenge because most of their players were young and  school going. Nonetheless, he said they were prepared for such challenges and thanked parents for allowing their children to play for the team.

Black Peril coach Nelson Olebile attributed their victory to a good pre-season. He said having had a short stint in the first division and later relegated last season, going forward their intention was to strategise on how best they could avoid such in the future. He said even though they had wanted to emerge at the top of the log after the play-offs, they were still happy even though they came second due to goal-difference.
