Malfunctioning sewerage system irks residents

09 May 2016

Tati Town Ward Development Committee (WDC) chairperson, Mr Lesego Mpayang, says his ward is facing issues that need to be addressed as a matter of urgency if the residents are to lead happy lives.

Speaking during a kgotla meeting addressed by Francistown West MP, Mr Ignatius Moswaane, recently, Mr Mpayang said one of the problems was the frequent blockages of the sewerage system.

“The smell from the overflowing drains is a health hazard to the community,” Mr Mpayang said, adding that other issues included malfunctioning streets lights and poor state of internal roads.

He said the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) could come handy in solving the prevailing problems.

In his response, the MP said he was aware of the issues that troubled the residents.

He cautioned residents against throwing wrong waste materials such as dead animals and old clothing into the sewer lines as they have the potential to block them.

He concurred that the area had a foul smell because of the blocked and overflowing drains.

Mr Moswaane said there was need for cooperation between the residents and Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) if the problem was to be effectively addressed.

He further told the residents that owners of plots that were not connected to the sewer line should group themselves and request for assistance from Francistown City Council (FCC).

On other issues, Mr Moswaane appealed to the residents to work with the government in its efforts to eradicate poverty.

He called on those who were funded to take care of their projects and desist from neglecting them and also to enrol in other programmes such as Ipelegeng.

The MP said the beneficiaries should have the passion to see their projects going to greater heights and should also register business names with the Registrar of Companies.

Tati Town Customary Court president, Kgosi Motlatsi Gafiwe-Kediseng, complained of high crime rate in his area.

He also urged the residents to unite in community service activities, adding that he was impressed by the community participation during the recent roving torch event in his area. ENDS
