College trains community

Byte Size College has offered 15 scholarships to various churches and the elderly in several villages across Boteti to learn computer operations skills.
The institution, which has been in existence with a single campus in Gaborone since December 2005, opened a branch in Letlhakane in July last year.
The Letlhakane branch offers various certificate courses in computer operation skills, early childhood education, human resource management, marketing, business management, financial management, secretarial & administration, business skills, purchasing and supply as well as security management.
The college, according to its operations director, Mr Godfrey Mwewa, hoped to empower the community and bridge the educational gap between rural and urban centres.
“Our aim is to play a major role in providing opportunities to individuals, organisations and serving employees to gain internationally recognized qualifications” he said.
He said Byte Size College was the first tertiary institution in Boteti and wished to establish itself as a college that served the communities it operated in with a long term dream to be the school of choice for corporate and individuals.
“We pride ourselves in being able to afford our students the opportunity to learn from their respective locations without being compelled to travel to towns and big cities looking for accommodation. We are able to significantly reduce the overall educational expenses for our clients by taking our services closer to them” he said.
The institution was also registered as a training institute that aimed at playing a major role in fighting illiteracy among Batswana.
On May 19, the institution will host an ICT challenge meant to enhance the use and appreciation of ICT among rural schools.
“The ICT competition will have about 70 students competing from schools across the Boteti District and students will be drawn from the villages of Letlhakane, Mopipi, Rakops, Madikola, Xhumo, Kedia, and Motopi.
Each school will be required to bring students who will compete in categories of practicals in the use of Microsoft word, access and Microsoft excel, ICT quiz, web design, system development, graphic design, robotics, social media marketing and magazine design,” he said..
He said, the future prospects of furthering the impact that ICT will have on rural students as the leaders of tomorrow was something they could take serious pride in.
That was why Byte Size College embarked on a deliberate approach to establish as many rural colleges as possible to avoid inconveniencing the rural communities from having to travel long distances to Gaborone institutions and to also ensure that tertiary education services were not centralised in big cities and towns but also cater for various demographics” he continued.
