President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama has urged government service providers to assist People Living with Disabilities (PLWDs) take up citizen empowerment programmes urgently.
He said this during a kgotla meeting he addressed in Omaweneno on April 22.
The President was responding to a request from one resident, Mr Bran Seloko who wanted his 2013 application under the poverty eradication programme fast tracked.
Mr Seloko, who lives with disability, decried that some people who applied after him had been assisted.
In response, President Khama explained that assisting PLWDs on time would assist them to help themselves and restore their dignity.
Meanwhile, disability programme coordinator in the Office of the President, Mr Thomas Motingwa expressed joy that 29 out of a total of 31 PLWDs had been assisted with citizen empowerment programmes with a view to help them sustain themselves in the area. The said Mr Seloko was among the three who were yet to benefit.
Mr Motingwa singled out the area social worker, Mr Manfred Kono and commended him for being responsive to the cause of PLWDs in the district.
The coordinator also urged PLWDs to form an organisation that would represent their wishes and aspirations. ENDS
