South East District deputy district commissioner Mr Richard Boitshwarelo has said that it was important to recognise and celebrate the public service.
He said this during the public service day commemoration in Tlokweng recently that public service had contributed to the development of the country.
Mr Boitshwarelo said government services, unlike in other countries, dominated economic activities.
He urged public servants to assist the public heartily and to help build a caring nation.
For her part, secretary of local government reforms in the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Dr Tlamelo Sekambo said the public service had contributed towards making the country a proud and united nation.
She advised that as they celebrated the day, they should reflect on their individual roles.
“Your role as a public servant is significant regardless of which title one holds,” said Dr Sekambo. She said civil servants had every reason to celebrate and to take pride in their efforts individually and collectively.
She emphasised that Batswana were not lazy people but rather lacked a corporate culture. She argued that if Batswana were lazy, the country would not be where it was today
She added that public servants should not take their contribution for granted because they were laying a foundation for the future generation.
“We are living in an information age. We need to think about what kind of Botswana we want in the next 50 years,” she said.Dr Sekambo advised public servants to pay attention to the fact that they were not working for private sector where their mandate was profit-oriented.
She explained that public servants should understand the importance and significance of being a servant because their mandate was to serve the nation. ENDS
