Eating is not adequate enough to keep a person healthy hence it is important that people also exercise.

Speaking at the Botswana College of Distance and Open Learning (BOCODOL) staff wellness day that was hosted at Lion Park recently, Dr Moseja Dibotelo from Princess Marina Hospital emphasised the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

“Regular exercising burns calories, helps maintain a healthy body weight, builds muscles, strengthens the heart, improves immune system and helps the body to function more efficiently,” he said.

Dr Dibotego who is a nutritionist, sounded warning bells against excessive consumption of food, explaining that it could lead to diseases such as stroke.

He added that people should avoid doing shopping when they are hungry. Dr Dibotego continued to explain that high intake of salt has been linked to high blood pressure and it damages the blood vessels and increases the risk to getting heart diseases and stroke.

Furthermore, Dr Dibotego said people should engage in physical activities of their choice, adding that food that contains big amounts of fat should be avoided, because it does not promote good health to an individual.

“Change of perception and behaviour could help in initiating living healthy lifestyle, life that is free from diseases,” he said. Ms Mariam Maroba, deputy director of BOCODOL, explained that the event builds team work and helps employees to relax from busy work schedule.

She said the event is not just about physical well-being but comprehends all aspects that deal with being healthy. Ms Maroba continued to say they also invited people from different health organisations for the public to indulge in medical check-up routines.

Mr Uyapo Mooketsi, senior human resource specialist at BOCODOL, said the staff wellness day was initiated in 2009 and it is an annual event. He explained that so far it has been a pleasing journey because more people are taking part in the event . ENDS
