Mascom hands P50 000 to Women Against Rape
30 Mar 2016
A board member of Women Against Rape (WAR), Ms Gladys Mafoko has expressed gratitude towards Mascom for granting their organisation funds amounting to P50 000.
Ms Mafoko was speaking at the handing over of the P50 000 cheque to WAR in Maun recently. The event was also graced by the Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, Mr Thapelo Olopeng.
She pointed out that non-governmental organisations (NGO)s relied largely on donations and that the funds from Mascom would help in ensuring that WAR achieved its objectives of assisting victims of violence.
She said their NGO hosted abused people who were mainly women and trained them on life skills as well as counselling sessions which required funds.
Ms Mafoko noted that NGO’s were no longer eligible for funding from international bodies because Botswana was considered a middle income country. She complained that the move negatively affected NGO’s such as WAR.
Mascom chief communications manager, Ms Tebogo Lebotse-Sebego said Mascom took the initiative to couple the annual Mascom Derby with corporate social responsibility activities since the past five years.
She said the donation towards WAR was a way of giving back to the Maun community to appreciate that Mascom was in existence because of customers from the community.
Ms Lebotse-Sebego said issues of gender violence were real and needed to be tackled at all costs.
Furthermore, she said Mascom had an Information Communication Technology (ICT) programme which was an initiative to connect schools in 85 villages in the country.
She said the programme has been incepted with six schools of Maun already connected. ENDS
