29 Mar 2016

The Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, Mr Tshekedi Khama says he is aware that baboons are destroying government property at Makgadikgadi Junior Secondary School.

Mr Khama said the kind of property destroyed and the cost of damages could be got from the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD).

He said the maintenance of government secondary schools, including Makgadikgadi JSS, was the responsibility of the MoESD and that his ministry was unable to state when the damaged property would be replaced.

Minister Khama said the school had advised his ministry about baboons destroying students’ crops in the school garden, and that the crops were part of their practical lessons.

He said his ministry dispatched a team of wildlife officers to the school to assess the situation and discuss preventative measures with the school management, adding that they were still awaiting the report.

The MP for Boteti East, Mr Setlhomo Lelatisitswe had asked the minister if he was aware that baboons were destroying government property at Makgadikgadi CJSS and what had the baboons destroyed and the cost of damage.

Mr Lelatisitswe had also wanted to know when the damaged property would be replaced, by who, its effect on learners and plans to prevent this from going on. Ends
