Group of volunteers build three houses
29 Mar 2016
A group of 14 people in Nata/Gweta constituency have built three houses for needy persons.
Handing over one of the three houses in Gweta recently, representative of the Presidential Housing Appeal committee, Colonel Duke Masilo, said in 2010, President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama made a plea to Batswana and the business community to help government shelter those in need.
Colonel Masilo noted that from the first house built in 2011, a total of 587 houses had already been built.
These houses, he said, had protected families from the harsh weather conditions adding that they had also given families the dignity and happiness as they too had a roof over their heads.
He, however, decried that though government had also appealed to families with people with disabilities to be registered with relevant authorities so as to be assisted accordingly, there were still many who were kept in dark places and prevented to be seen in public.
Such a thing, he said, should be dealt away with and allow these people to seen and helped particularly those who could not do anything for themselves.
Meanwhile, the chairperson of the group, Mr Joe Linga, said as members of Nata/Gweta community, they felt challenged to play a meaningful role in their area to changing the lives of those in need.
He said though they had their own houses that they called home, they were prompted to dig deep into their pockets and build the three houses, one at Dukwi, Mosetse and Gweta.
Mr Linga added that one of their members, Mr Tiro Seloma, offered P40 000 that provided a foundation to work on.
They also managed to raise funds while at the same time seeking help from companies among them Botash which donated beds. The group used a total of P98 428 to complete the project of housing three families.
Appreciating the gesture, one of the beneficiaries Mr Shimane Mmonadilo of Mosetse, said he was grateful to the group for having changed his life and appealed to other members of the community to help those in need. Ends
