Traffic lights serve purpose

23 Mar 2016

The Ministry of Transport and Communications has installed traffic lights at Bokaa junction to regulate traffic movement at the junction.

The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Tshenolo Mabeo said the traffic lights had performed well given the purpose they were designed for.

He, however, said accidents had slightly increased over the years as a result of failure to obey traffic signals.

Minister Mabeo further said statistics from Botswana Police indicate that from 2011 to March 2016, 32 accidents occurred at the traffic lights in question and that out of the 32 accidents, six people lost their lives, nine sustained serious injuries while 17 sustained minor injuries.

He said through the Department of Road Transport and Safety and other stakeholders, they conducted public awareness and educational campaigns.

He said Botswana Police Service constantly mounts speed traps and monitors the situation around that area along the A1 Road with the intent to caution motorists to observe speed limits and traffic lights.

Mochudi East Member of Parliament, Mr Isaac Davids had asked the minister to state his intention regarding the increased number of accidents at Bokaa traffic lights along the A1 Road.

He also asked the number of accidents that occured since inception of the traffic lights/completion of the road; the number of accidents that resulted in death; and the number of those who were maimed and crippled. Ends
