22 Mar 2016

The Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, Mr Tshekedi Khama has explained to Parliament that his ministry stopped fishing at Lake Ngami last year in order to develop a management plan to control fishing activities at the lake.

Mr Khama said the management plan had been completed and given to the lake management trust, adding that the plan entailed the construction of sanitary and accommodation facilities at the lake.

He said an environmental impact assessment study would be completed by a local company soon after which developments would commence.

Okavango MP, Mr Bagalatia Arone had asked the minister to brief Parliament about the progress of proposed developments at the lake.

Mr Khama further told Parliament that his ministry had assisted the lake management trust to find stakeholders that would help in the construction of infrastructure.

He said the trust comprises of Community Based Natural Resource Management Organisations (CBNRMO) from five villages around the lake.

The minister stated that once the proposed facilities have been constructed, fishing would commence at Lake Ngami, adding that this time around fishing would be done in a controllable manner beneficial to communities around the lake. ENDS
