Gaabo Motho to restore families
22 Mar 2016
Gaabo Motho, a nonprofit making organization could be just what defunct and polarised family network in Botswana needs.
Shimane Moipone, one of the 11 founding members of Gaabo Motho is upbeat the organisation, launched in Kanye a month ago, will become an instant hit and necessary platform in uniting families.
Gaabo Motho, is a short for Setswana maxim “Gaabo Motho go Thebe Phatshwa” premised on the concept of sound family ties.
“The rate at which families disintegrates is scary and unacceptable,” says Moipone adding the spirit of love and interdependence that used to prevail within the family structure is no more.
He says the search for greener pastures by families should never be allowed to weaken existing family structures that otherwise act as support systems during difficult times.
“Fragmented family structures is the primary reason government safety nets are inundated with orphans and destitute persons because in the event a breadwinner passes on, those remaining have no clue whom to turn to for support,” he adds.
It is against this background that Moipone and company mulled the idea which has been embraced by many among them; government departments, tribal leadership and general public.
Although not yet operational, Gaabo Motho has many waiting in anticipation for its maiden services.
The programme, according to Moipone will to a great extent take the shape of South Africa’s Khumbulekhaya albeit with more emphasis on the fight against domestic violence and abuse.
Moipone also assures Gaabo Motho beneficiaries that there will be high confidentiality in the way their cases will be dealt with and that concerned parties reserve the right to object or allow their cases to be aired on television.
Kgosietsile who is also a founding member and Treasurer for Gaabo Motho says once in operation, the organisation will receive requests from Kanye and beyond. “Remember we are here to bring families together; locally and internationally,” he says. Their intention is to develop a working relationship with Khumbulekhaya in future as this will prove cost effective and less strenuous. Ends
