Maun Administration Authority (MAA) chairperson, Ramogaopi Gaborekwe says sports tourism has the potential to contribute to the development of the country.

Speaking an interview, Gaborekwe said all efforts towards sports development were worth nurturing since it was at the infancy stage in the country.

He was speaking at a Motox Fun Day event hosted by the Okavango Motor Club over the weekend in Maun.

Gaborekwe said motor sporting activities had the potential to promote Ngamiland District and diversify the economy of the area.

The Okavango Motor Club has proven to be at an advanced stage and will bring positive contribution to the Maun community in business and a variety of choice to spectators.

In an interview, Okavango Motor Club’s Tammi McAllister said the Motox Fun Day which had participants from other places like Francistown and first time females and children was purported to re-introduce the club to its fans since it has been dormant for many years.

McAllister said Okavango Motor Club was revived last year and they plan to grow the sport in Maun.

She revealed that they have an international event on the cards to be hosted in May this year which would attract motor riders from Southern African countries, Gaborone and other parts of Botswana.

McAllister said the Okavango Motor Club would also host another event over the independence holidays in Maun.

She said Okavango Motor Club had promising riders with one young man Joshua Potts currently with the Botswana national team.

McAllister said they were grateful for support from the district office and the land board. She said they planned to have their own plot with developed motor tracks and facilities.ENDS
