Women must support each other
21 Mar 2016
Women in Jwaneng have been encouraged to support each other.
Speaking during the Jwaneng district women’s day commemoration, Dr Tirelo Modie, said supporting each other would force change in gender equality.
She explained that even though the country did well in ensuring necessary steps to achieving gender equality were met, women also held the master key to creating a friendly and acceptable future that would enable the upcoming girl child to pursue her dreams without fear.
Dr Modie said by holding each other’s hands, women would be sending massive volumes of education to their girl children on the importance of unity and cooperation among women thus building a bright and united nation for the development of the girl child.
She explained that even though there were Batswana women excelling in different forums that ook decisions for the country and the world at large like parliament, cabinet, African Union and United Nations there is still a lot that needs to be done to give courage to other women to aim higher as it is only a small percentage of women in such organizations compared to men.
Dr Modie mentioned that as the country is aiming to have equality of both genders by the year 2030, it is vital that women stand for their rights hand in hand with each other. She said that it does not say much to have a small percentage of women excelling especially in a country like Botswana which has a large number of women compared to men. She said that it is long overdue for women to trust and rally behind each other for the realization of gender equality in the country.
The guest speaker encouraged women to provide a helping hand to each other to eliminate violence of any kind, explaining that elimination of violence goes hand in hand with realizing gender quality. ENDS
