Crocodiles kill three in Thamalakane River

No person was killed from 2013 to date by crocodiles in the Thamalakane River, Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, Mr Tshekedi Khama has said. 

Mr Khama told Parliament that three people were injured, of which the first person was injured in February 2014, the second in April 2015 and the third person in November 2015.

 “A total of 151 domestic animals were killed and five were injured, consisting of 139 goats, five cows, two horses, one foal, one donkey, three dogs and one calf,” he said.

He said the ministry had been responsive to the problem of crocodiles since 2011, adding that mitigating measures had been implemented. They include radio spot announcements to sensitise the community, life capture and translocation of problem crocodiles and addressing all Maun primary schools to educate pupils to approach the river with caution. 

The Member of Parliament for Maun East, Mr Kostantinos Markus had wanted the minister to state the number of deaths and injuries of people and domestic animals caused by crocodiles along the Thamalakane River from 2013 to date and remedial measures taken. Ends
