Inadequate furniture supply affects learning

20 Mar 2016

Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Frans Van Der Westhuizen says all six primary schools in Selebi Phikwe West constituency have shortages of furniture for both pupils and teachers.

Mr Van Der Westhuizen said the type of furniture in short supply was for infant, middle and upper classes, and that there was also shortage of small, medium and large tables.

“As for chairs, all schools have enough chairs except for reception. The inadequate furniture in schools affects the learning and teaching as pupils share tables and this affects their writing and their learning,” he said.

Mr Van Der Westhuizen stated that furniture that was in short supply was currently being procured by the Selebi Phikwe Town Council for all classes, including tables and chairs for reception classes and that delivery would start on March 21.

The MP for Selebi Phikwe West, Mr Dithapelo Keorapetse  had asked the minister to state the number of primary schools in Selebi Phikwe West constituency which have shortages of furniture for both pupils and teachers.

He also wanted to know the type of furniture that was in short supply, and how this has affected or was affecting teaching and learning and how the minister would address the situation. Ends
