The Local Enterprise Authority (LEA) has been appointed a strategic partner to offer training to Target 20 000 unemployed youth to change their lives for the better.

Speaking during a full council session in Kanye, Southern District Council chairperson, Mr Mephato Reatile said the government has introduced an up-skilling and up-scaling initiative targeting 20 000 youth.

He said the skills development process would be implemented through the Ministry of Education and Skills Development for a five year period.

The strategy to absorb unemployed youth into short and long-term programmes, he said, were offered by public and private training providers.

“LEA will provide training on entrepreneurial development, sales and marketing as well as business planning and record keeping,” Mr Reatile said.

He encouraged the youth to take advantage of the programme to improve their standard and quality of life.

On education improvement initiatives, Mr Reatile said in an attempt to improve the PSLE, JCE and BGCSE results, the region would strengthen the public academic empowerment strategy (PAES) in primary schools, organise workshops for Standard 7 teachers on PAES and benchmark on best practices as well as engaging in study camps during holidays to assist struggling schools.

He further said there would be an enforcement of the assessment of special learners and come up with interventions.

He said the region has started to engage the district and local leadership to share ways to improve discipline in schools.

He encouraged teachers to exhibit exemplary behaviour in the learning process, to keep focus on academic performance and to strive for excellence at all times. Ends
