09 May 2013

Gold producer and explorer, Galane Gold, has come up with its flag bearing the official emblem since the takeover of Mupane Gold Mine and Shashe operations from IAMGOLD in August 2011.

This followed successful completion of the acquisition deal in July of the same year.

Speaking during the flag raising occasion on Monday, Mupane Gold Mine general manager, Mr Lawrence Manjengwa explained that the objective of the event was to present a flagging symbol of the Galane Gold’s presence in Botswana by raising the flag that bore the official company emblem for the first time.

Mr Manjegwa also noted that the historic event marked the beginning of a new era for the gold mining industry in Botswana which they were proud to share with all their stakeholders.

“The Galane Gold emblem is a symbol of its pride and flying this everyday alongside the national flag of Botswana at its operations as from today would be a clear expression of a long lasting relationship with stakeholders in the country,” he said.

He also said the emblem design was the brainchild of one of the Mupane Gold Mine employees. The general manager also said Galane Gold operations in Botswana employed more than 500 employees, directly and indirectly through contractors.

Again, he said the company was the sole gold producer in the country and had a significant contribution to the economy in a number of ways. Therefore, he said they acknowledged that communities around its operations were key contributors to the success of its operations.

Through its sustainability policy, he highlighted, the company was committed to creating lasting relationships with communities built on mutual respect and trust in order to reach objectives and shared involvement based on Galane Gold’s corporate social initiatives and public relations strategies.

Furthermore, he explained that the company was also committed to respecting human dignity as well as the rights of individual and communities associated with their operations.

Mines acting director, Mr Gabotshwarege Tshekiso thanked Galane Gold for its commitment to prospecting for more reserves despite challenges facing the mining industry.

Mr Tshekiso also expressed hope that the company was also looking at progressive rehabilitation of the mine as well as control of contamination of water.

On outsourcing at the mine, the acting director encouraged the company to consider engaging their former employees by giving them opportunity to provide services. ENDS
