Democratic youth clubs educate students
09 Mar 2016
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has introduced democratic youth clubs in schools to educate students about the importance of elections and voting.
The principal election officer in South East, Ms Selemogwe Kwaranba, announced this to party liaison committees on Tuesday.
Ms Kwaramba said the formation of democratic youth clubs was a way of educating students.
She said this was also to mould them into becoming future political leaders and cultivating their interest in political sphere.
Ms Kwaramba said the clubs were centered on subjects such as History and Development Studies.
In addition, elections officer Mr Carthage Modisane, explained that IEC had made arrangements with ministry of education and development skills to educate students about elections.
Mr Modisane said the clubs had been established in junior and secondary senior schools, adding that they had been travelling around the country to educate students about elections.
One of the representatives, Mr Ben Tingwane said it might be wrong for students to be taught about elections at an early stage because they had not yet matured.
Further he added that it was surprising that the democratic youth clubs were established in 2012 but they had not been formed in Ramotswa. Ends
