Van der Westhuizen appeals for support

08 Mar 2016

For Tsabong Unified Secondary School to succeed, there is need for concerted efforts from students, parents, teachers and the community.

This came out during an orientation event for Form Four’s at the newly opened school, which has admitted 259 Form Four students most of them boarding students.

The area Member of Parliament, Mr Frans Van der Westhuizen, urged stakeholders to come together to support and encourage staff so that they could achieve their mandate

He pointed out that there was need to work as a team so that the district could do better academically, warning that if they sit back that would not be possible.

The MP told parents that it was their duty to know the whereabouts of their children and to desist from giving them too much freedom that seemed to be the major factor in them ending up being mischievous.

He also warned  students to desist from vandalism, which was rife in public schools, pointing out that the project had cost close to P4 million and that the ministry was struggling with maintenance fees.

He acknowledged that although students were resuming their classes while construction was still underway, the decision was taken because they were saving parents from taking students to faraway places such as Kang where most failed to attend meetings.

Mr Van der Westhuizen also said there was a need to have a policy to control churches because schools were invaded by bad influences such as Satanism.

Earlier, the school head, Mr Kooagile Gabonthone told students that they should know that the primary reason why they were in school was because they came to learn so they should take their education seriously.

He also urged them to work hard and turn the fortunes of the district around by at least targeting to be amongst the top 10 schools countrywide, adding that they were ready to deal with any student who misbehaves.

He also pleaded with parents that since they would no longer be travelling long distances, they hope to see them often because they were  free to come and check how their children were doing academically.

Most parents expressed happiness that they would be saved from the hustle of taking their children too far where it was impossible for them to monitor their progress and attend PTA meetings. ENDS
