08 Mar 2016

Botswana has been ranked 9th in the 2016 Bertelsman Management Index, which ranked countries according to their leadership’s political management performance between February 2013 and January 2015.

A press release from the Office of the President states that the Bertelsmann Foundation, which is based in Germany, has released its Management and Status Indices under the rubric of its 2016 Transformation Index Report.

The statement further states that the report, which is published on a biannual basis, is intended to provide a comprehensive view of the status of democracy, governance and socially responsible market economics, as well as the overall quality of political management in 129 non-Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries.

The press release says in the separate Status Index which ranks the countries according to their quality of democracy and market economy as of January 31, 2015, Botswana achieved 17th position out of 129 countries, just above EU member state Hungary.

The 2016 Management Index’s top 10 (with their scores) were: Uruguay (7.56), Chile (7.51), Taiwan (7.48), Estonia (7.40), Poland (7.22), Lithuania (7.19), Latvia (6.97), Slovakia (6.96), Botswana (6.95) and South Korea (6.89)

It states that based on the above the report further goes on to place Botswana in the global top 20 for the “advanced” status of its democracy and economy. ENDS
