Segwagwagwa donkey cart race for Bobonong

03 Mar 2016

Bobonong will host a donkey cart race called Segwagwagwa in  December.

The race will be the first of its kind in the village and country.

Segwagwagwa is a Sebirwa way to tie donkeys to a donkey cart whereby four donkeys are lined to pull a cart.

The event organiser, Omphile Moemedi said the lack of annual events in Bobonong made him to come up with the donkey cart race idea. He said the race would attract spectators from and outside the village during the festive season.

He said the race would be held in December and that the date of the race would be announced in due course.

“It is painful to see people spending most of  their time in bars drinking alcohol during the festive holidays as a way of refreshing their minds while they are off duty and away from their working destinations,” he said.

He said the event would be a non- profit making venture, but rather an event to bring residents together.

“In future my intention is to transform this race into a profit making event that will help the less privileged and families  with funds raised from the event.” he said.

Moemedi said he has already drafted the rules and regulations that would be used in the race, and that he was getting positive responds from companies that were willing to sponsor the event.

He said he would also approach the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture to ask for funds that would be used in the preparation of the event.

“I am on the way to approach the village police station so that they can help me with ideas on how the race can be conducted safely and even to help during the race as some people will come to the event for the wrong reasons,” he added.

He said the race would take place on the road that was not busy and that they prefer the Bobonong – Tsetsebjwe road which was not used by many motorists.

“The starting point will be at Famo River and the finishing point will be at Bobonong Show Grounds,” he said

He added that prizes would be awarded from the first to the fifth position. The 1st prize will be P5 000, 2nd prize P4 000, 3rd prize P3 000, 4th prize P2 000 and 5th prize P1 000.

Moemedi said they were aiming  for at least 20 participants with an entrance fee of P50. He added that entry forms would be available in all shops and bars around the village. Ends
