Tatitown wants safe secure nation

03 Mar 2016

Residents of Tatitown have expressed concern on issues of safety and security in their community to the Vision 2036 task team.

The Bagodi Sedi la Sechaba committee chairperson, Mr Phenyo Pelaelo suggested that Botswana should tighten national security as people would feel safer hence productive.

He suggested that the country should improve the training for police officers and increase their numbers and equipment such as vehicles to improve their response time when called to attend cases.

He said the government was not doing enough to empower police officers to fight crime. He added that criminals were  walking the streets because they easily get bail, saying it puts the safety of people in such communities in danger.

Furthermore, he complained about the high number of illegal immigrants in the North East District. He said the government also needs to increase security at the borders to protect its territory and its people.

The Village Development Committee (VDC) chairperson, Mr Albert Mudanga raised concern over the high crime rate within his community, also calling for the strengthening of security.

Mr Mudanga said Riverside location, which is located by the Tati River, has many hiding spots for criminals, and that the lack of streets lights makes it difficult for the police to search or follow criminals when its dark.

A community elder, Ms Mmasenyana Ramotshwari suggested that the education sector should introduce the system of repeating classes in Standard Seven, Form Three and Form Five as students fail in large numbers and end up loitering in the streets with nothing to do.

Ms Ramotshwari also urged parents to change their attitudes towards teachers, saying some have the tendency of attacking teachers verbally. She said the way some parents interact with teachers demoralises teachers and leads them to ignore students even when they misbehave.

Tatitown Customary Court president, Kgosi Motlatsi Gafiwe-Kediseng said a safe and secure nation pillar by 2036 would help people to live in harmony hence healthy relationships that would enable people to look out for one another and have the will to report criminal activities.

He suggested that towns should have representatives in Ntlo ya Dikgosi by 2036, as it would help build a united and proud nation. Ends
