Poor results worry South East chair
03 Mar 2016
South East District Council chairperson, Mr Phenyo Segokgo, has expressed concern about schools’ declining performance.
Addressing a full council session on Monday, Mr Segokgo said it was disheartening to see students’ performance on a downwards spiral.
He said out of the three senior schools in the district; St Joseph College, Moeding College and Kagiso Senior Secondary School, only St Joseph College surpassed the 50 per cent mark.
“Kagiso and Moeding are among the bottom, our junior schools did not make it to top 20 and also none of the primary schools made it to the national top 10 best performing schools,” Mr Segokgo explained.
He explained that the poor results did not reflect especially that the country would be celebrating 50 years of independence and attainment of Vision 2016 ideals.
He said the poor results were contrary to the pillar that called for an educated and informed nation by year 2016.
Mr Segokgo said the significance that education played in the country’s development could not be overemphasised adding that the declining performance should be addressed as a matter of agency.
He expressed concern that the poor results could eventually lead to leadership skills vacuum in the society. Moreover, the South East District chairperson called upon the region to work together to produce positive results for the benefit of the country.
He said the community should evaluate and tap into the opportunities given by programmes such as the Economic Stimulus Programme. Ends
