The Lady Khama Charitable Trust (LKCT) has donated a school bus to Masupe Primary School and wheelchairs to Golden Years Group.
The trust’s patron, Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama, handed the donations to beneficiaries at Office of the President yesterday.
Mr Dale Ter Haar, the trust’s chairperson, said Masupe Primary School special education unit applied for provision of a school bus to transport learners with disability from the six villages surrounding Maunatlala.
He stated that the Maunatlala-based school applied for support in 2014.
“Now that the special education unit, through the support of the Embassy of Japan, is near completion, we trust that the donation of this bus will help to contribute to a brighter future for the children and we wish them and the Masupe Primary School staff all the best going forward,” Mr Ter Haar said.
The Golden Years Group, a charitable organisation that provides support to elderly people and people with disabilities in Maun, was given three wheelchairs.
Mr Ter Haar said the trust was happy to support the organisation because it gave companionship by providing carers who visited elderly members, taking them for shopping and accompanying them on trips to their doctors.
He said the trust had made a substantial contribution to over 40 charities in Botswana.
The trust, he added, would stage four fund raising events this year to raise more funds for charity.
These events, he said, would include the Lady Khama half marathon next month, Ghanzi horse endurance relay and Lady Khama diamond derby in May, the Lady Khama family fun day in August, and the Lady Khama golf day in October.
Mr Ter Haar also said the trust had raised over P800 000 through Orange Pompa Lebotha sms competition.
Meanwhile, the trust received a vehicle donation from China Aid and the Chinese Embassy, which will be used in support of the trust’s work.
The Chinese ambassador, Mr Zheng Zhuqiang, said they donated the vehicle in recognition of the hard work done by the trust to improve lives especially vulnerable women and children.
He stated that China had supported more than 30 charitable programmes benefitting thousands of Batswana with a total donation of more than P2 million. Ends
