Malfunctioning pump station causes spillage

23 Feb 2016

The spillage of the sewerage water in Sowa Town is caused by malfunctioning of pump station four, which is the last pump station prior to delivery to the Sowa Treatment Ponds.

This was said by the Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, Mr Kitso Mokaila in response to a parliamentary question. He said as a short term intervention, the Water Utilities Corporation was undertaking de-sludging of the pump station.

Some of the interventions, he said,  included daily removal of the screenings such as cloths and other non-organic materials to prevent clogging at Pump Station 4, and replacement of worn out leaking pipes and valves that affect the effectiveness of the pump station.

“The contractor is currently on site and the project is scheduled for completion on February 19.

The pumping of the spilled waste water back into the sewer line, which was completed February 5, this year, were some of the interventions undertaken, he said.
Regarding the long term interventions that Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) had to undertake included de-sludging of the wastewater pond, which had long been due but the activity was not undertaken due to lack of funds, said Mr Mokaila.

He said WUC interventions also included the rehabilitation of the Sowa wastewater Scheme. The project, he added is proposed under the NDP 11 fiscal period.
He assured the House that his ministry would strive to ensure that a sustainable solution to the problem was found.

Minister Mokaila said this in response to a question from MP for Nata/Gweta, Mr Polson Majaga who asked the minister if he was aware that the spillage of sewerage water in Sowa Town had attracted a lot of animals to the Township, especially elephants and cattle which pose danger to the lives of Sowa Community and whether there were plans to rectify the situation.
