Digital migration to create more jobs
21 Feb 2016
Migration of television from analogue to digital technology will create more jobs, according to project coordinator, Mr Nonofo Kebareng.
Speaking during a recent kgotla meeting, Mr Kebareng said the migration would lead to creation of another television station; Botswana Television 2. He said the station would hire its personnel.
“We will hire new staff for the television news and other programmes and they will not be the ones currently working for Botswana television”, he said.
Mr Kebareng explained that expression of interest process has already been done and Batswana had shown interest to feed the new station with content.
He further noted that the move to change from analogue to digital came as a result of memorandum of agreement signed by countries to move to create clear picture and sound of television for the viewer.
“The digitalised e-government will also be available in your television set and it will help ordinary Batswana to access different ministries and their services at the comfort of their homes”, he said.
He said all the ministries would be available on television and the viewer will be able to select and acquire the information they needed. Mr Kebareng illustrated the use of the set top box adding that, it would also be able to record programmes in the absence of the viewer through the use of a memory stick.
He also highlighted that Christian channels and other channels currently viewed on other decoders will not be available in their set unless the owners approach Botswana Communication Regulatory Agency (BOCRA).
“It is also beneficial to Batswana as those people will pay some fees to be included in our set top box”, he explained. Ends
