Sharps aim play-offs
16 Feb 2016
Sharps Electrical coach, Wilfred Mahaja is confident that his on-form team will make the premiership play-offs this season if they continue with their recent good performance in the First Division South League.
Sharps defeated struggling Prisons XI 3-1 at the SSG Ground on Saturday to move into third position with 21 points, seven behind log-leaders Black Forest.
Striker Ofentse Chitutu found the net twice in that match, one with a low drive from the edge of the penalty area on the stroke of half-time, while the second was from the penalty spot early in the second half.
Tabona Dithole slammed a beautiful finish into the roof of the net late in the second half to finish off the Warders who played poorly on the day. Prisons’ consolation was scored by Taelo Nthomiwa from the penalty spot.
The win continued Sharps’ purple patch which has yielded three wins and a draw from their last five matches, and their coach said the Old Naledi based team could challenge for the play-offs.
“This league is wide open and anyone from the top six teams can be promoted. What we need is to keep on fighting.
Black Forest is on top at the moment but we still have to play them.
We don’t target specific teams, but if we can beat them and continue doing well we can reach the play-offs,” Mahaja said.
The veteran coach said he was impressed by the manner in which his team has responded to the tough competition in the first division. It is Sharps second season in the second tier league following their promotion from Gaborone Regional Division 1 in 2014.
They finished in midtable last season. The fortunes of ex-premier league campaigners, Prisons, continue to slide as they slipped into the bottom two with 13 points and are in real risk of relegating to regional football at the end of the campaign.
Meanwhile in the first division matches played over the weekend, Lesirane City held Mogoditshane Fighters to a goalless draw at Lesirane Ground while Mochudi Rovers and Modipane United played drew 1-1 in the Kgatleng derby. Second placed Rolling Boys and fourth placed Uniao Flamingo Santos drew 1-1 on Sunday.
Matches between Notwane and Letlapeng, as well as log leaders Black Forest and Tsabong Black Rangers didn’t go ahead due to absence of referees. Ends
