Programme to abate shortage

14 Feb 2016

Machaneng in the Sefhare/Ramokgonami constituency has received 25 houses under the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP).

The Ministry of Lands and Housing is constructing the  housing units for allocation to various government departments.

Minister of Lands and Housing, Mr Prince Maele, informed President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama during a tour of the project at Machaneng over the weekend that of the 17 contractors awarded the tender, nine were youth.
He said construction of the 25 houses, built under the Public Officers Housing Initiative started on February 1 and expected to be complete by May, adding that progress was impressive.

Mr Maele said ESP came at the right time to address the problem of shortage of accommodation for public officers.
In addition, he said 750 houses would be built under the Installment Purchase Scheme of which 250 would be set aside for purchase by the youth.

He said the idea was to enable the youth earning P8 000 or below to purchase houses.
He said the 25 houses were part of the 107 houses that would be built for public officers in the central district, whilst Kweneng and Kgatleng districts will receive 19 and 29 houses respectively.

He further said his ministry was constructing a total of 1 500 turnkey houses, with each constituency receiving 17 houses.
However 35 turnkey houses will be built in Sefhare/Ramokgonami constituency in the villages of Pilikwe, Maape, Moshopha, Ramokgonami, Seleka, Sefhare, Machaneng, Mokobeng and Chadibe.

In addition, he said his ministry was also engaged in minimal land servicing through provision of access roads and water reticulation.
He said land servicing was costly and therefore could not cover every part of the country at once thus 37 000 plots will be serviced. Ends
