Govt reviews conditions for special constables

14 Feb 2016

Minister for Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Mr Eric Molale, says he is aware that some special constables have been in the police service for more than five years.

Answering a question on behalf of the Minister of Defence, Justice and Security in Parliament on Thursday, Mr Molale, said he was also not aware of any form of unfair treatment of special constables in the Botswana Police Service.

To the contrary, he said, government continued to review conditions of service of this cadre, the latest being Police Special Constables Regulations 2015, which outlined recruitment procedure, hours of work and other entitlements during their employment.

He said to his knowledge there had been no departure from these regulations.

He further told Parliament that the Botswana Police Service employs 3 608 special constables. Of these, 655 have served for less than one year, 2 197 have served for a period between one and five years while 756 served for periods between six and 11 years.

MP for Francistown West, Mr Ignatius Moswaane had asked the minister if he was aware that some special constables had been in the police service for more than five years and why special constables were facing unfair treatment in the workplace.

He had also wanted the minister to categorically state the number of special constables in the police as well as the years of service. Ends
