President Lieutenant General Seretse Khama Ian Khama has appointed Mr Andrew Maatla Motsomi to the position of Deputy Governor of the Bank of Botswana with effect from February 1, 2016.

According to a press release from Bank of Botswana, the appointment follows the retirement of Deputy Governor Mr Oduetse Motshidisi whose third 5-year contract expired at the end of January 2016, having served the Bank in various positions for 27 years.

The communique says Mr Motsomi joined the bank in 1983 and rose through the ranks in a number of departments to head the Research Department (now Monetary and Financial Stability Department) in 2003 and the Banking Supervision Department in 2010.

“In the latter department, he was responsible for the regulation and supervision of banks and he has also worked for the International Monetary Fund under the special appointee programme,” says the release.

It states that Mr Motsomi obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Accounting from the University of Botswana in 1983, a post-graduate Diploma in Economic Development and Planning from the African Institute for Economic Development and Planning (Dakar, Senegal) in 1987, and a Master’s Degree in Economics from the Victoria University of Manchester in 1990.
