Ghanzi has 70 temporary teachers

Parliament has been informed that there are 43 primary and 27 secondary school temporary teachers in the Ghanzi District.
The Minister of Education, Skills and Development, Dr Unity Dow, said there were also 94 primary and 45 secondary temporary teachers in Kgalagadi District.
Answering a question in Parliament, Dr Dow said all the teachers were qualified except for two offering physics and two offering business studies.
The minister said some of the temporary teachers had been recruited to cover for officers who were away on leaves such as maternity or further studies.
“Others have been recruited to augment teachers in schools where the number of classes has increased and the ministry has engaged with Directorate of Public Service Management (DPSM) to create posts with the hope of employing additional teachers on a permanent basis,” she said.
Member of Parliament for Ghanzi North Mr Noah Salakae had asked the minister to state the number of temporary teachers in primary and secondary schools in Ghanzi and Kgalagadi districts.
Mr Salakae wanted the minister to also state if they were qualified or without qualification and the reasons for having temporary teachers when there was oversupply of teachers in Botswana. Ends
