Kurwana Volleyball star par excellence

Volleyball star, Agisanang ‘Oscar’ Kurwana, believes his achievements are a results of hard work, commitment and passion.
The national team and BDF 6 player, is comfortable as a setter and outside attacker.
Born in Bobonong 31 years ago, Kurwana is armed with a degree in physical education and sports from International School of Physical Education and Sports in Cuba.
He works as a sports development officer in Serowe.
Kurwana started to rise to the stardom at Ikhutseng Primary School in Francistown when he was a footballer.
He also schooled at Madikwe Primary School in Bobonong where he was rated as the best football player in Bobirwa Sub-district.
“The spirit of hard work made me a unique football player who could almost play all departments”, said Kurwana.
His love for football continued at Bobirwa Junior Secondary School where he was called for trials at Under 17 national team.
Kurwana was transferred to Donga Junior Secondary School in Francistown in 2001 where he found that most of his classmates were playing in the school volley ball team.
This influenced him to visit them at the training and he started to train with them after which he realised that he had talent in volleyball.
“I impressed the school volleyball coach and he included me in the school team where I performed very well and I decided to quit football”, he said.
He said he took the Donga JSS volley all team to top four in the history of the school.
“I was admitted at Matshekge Senior Secondary School in 2003 and I also managed to take the school valleyball team to top four for two consecutive years,2003 and 2004 ”, he said.
Kurwana said he was selected to play in the Botswana Integrated Sports Association (BISA) volleyball team where they managed to win Zone 6 gold medal in Zambia.
“After completing my Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE), I was awarded a sponsorship to study Degree in Physical Education and sports in Cuba after being chosen as a promising yvalleyball player in the country. In 2005, I joined BDF 6 valleyball team to play as a setter and outside attacker”, said Kurwana.
He said while playing at BDF 6, he managed to win some awards such as the most valuable player in BMW Capital Motors tournament and best receiver in Mascom volleyball league and best server in Zone 6 club champions and best server in world cup qualifiers.
Kurwana said he won the Mascom valleyball league two times in 2012 and 2013 with BDF 6 and this earned him a call up at the national volleyball team after spotted performing well at the team.
He said at the national team, he represented the country at the African Cup of Nations volleyball tournament, All Africa Games and Olympic qualifiers.
“After completing my studies in Cuba, I was absorbed by Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) as a sports development officer in Central District in Serowe”, he said.
Kurwana said when he retires in sports he would focus on sports development to share his experiences with the young athletes who were eager to excel in sports.
He advised youth who wanted to excel in sports to always work hard and not to be pushed to do training because sport needed somebody who had passion to do things their own.
Kurwana also encouraged youth to take their education seriously as education is always a key to success and use sports as a backup tool. Ends
