Ministry capacitates land boards

27 Jan 2016

The Ministry of Lands and Housing has embarked on a series of initiatives to capacitate land boards to deliver services to customers more effectively and efficiently.

Answering a question at the ongoing Ntlo ya Dikgosi session on Monday, the Minister of Lands and Housing, Mr Prince Maele said the initiatives were not limited to the recruitment of qualified personnel, the implementation of a new organisational structure, the re-engineering of land delivery processes, daily service delivery, creation of customer service centres, improvement of record keeping, development of land formation system and review legislation.

Mr Maele was responding to Kgosi Colly Cock of Thamaga region who had asked the minister if he was aware that land boards were slow in service delivery.

Kgosi Cock said it could take up to a year to resolve a dispute pertaining to a plot encroaching onto another.

He said the delay could cause loss of evidence resulting in one party being prejudiced or even losing a plot. Meanwhile, Mr Maele also said his ministry through Botswana Housing Corporation (BHC) has already acquired land and funds for the construction of houses in various areas around the country including Kang and Hukunsti.

Mr Maele said 44 houses were rescheduled to be constructed in Hukuntsi, Kang and surrounding areas.

He stated that Hukuntsi and Kang would have 15 houses each while Hunkukwe, Tshane, Legwabe and Lehututu would each get three. He added that Inalegolo would have two BHC houses built.
He said construction would commence on February 19 and would be completed by the end of May yhis year.

Mr Maele, however, said the houses would not be sold through the Tenant Purchase Scheme for the mean time.

Mr Maele was responding to Kgosi Moeti Monyamane of Kgalagadi North who had wanted to know when the Ministry of Lands and Housing would consider constructing houses through BHC in Kgalagadi North to address the acute shortage of accommodation for government and parastatal employees. Ends
