Beware of Typhoid Fever Outbreak

The public is informed that Typhoid fever outbreak has been reported in South Africa. According to a press release from the Ministry of Health Typhoid fever is normally a serious disease and can be fatal. 

The release says it is caused by Salmonella species of bacteria and it is spread through food and water contaminated by faeces and urine.

“Typhoid fever presents with several symptoms including extreme fever, headaches, joint and muscle pain, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting,” states the release.

It says the Ministry of Health facilities are on high alert to respond and provide all necessary health services for the control and prevention of any suspected Typhoid fever cases. 

The release further says the Ministry advises the public to take precautionary measures to avoid typhoid including, improved hygiene namely: disinfection of surfaces (toilets, bathrooms and kitchens, proper disposal of human waste) and appropriate disposal of waste.

In addition they should regularly wash their hands especially after using toilet and wash fruits and vegetables before eating them.

It further says they should boil water if not sure of the source and food handlers to observe good hygiene practices including personal hygiene.

The release states that the Ministry of Health will continue to monitor the situation and update the public accordingly. Ends
