MP advises residents to buy BTCL shares
25 Jan 2016
MP for Gaborone Central, Dr Phenyo Butale, has advised residents of Tsholofelo South Ward to buy Botswana Telecommunications Corporation Limited (BTCL) shares.
Addressing a kgotla meeting recently, the MP said the privatisation of BTCL was meant to offer Batswana an opportunity to invest.
He also urged residents to join the Gaborone Central burial scheme.
He informed the residents that Parliament would sit in February, commencing with the budget speech, which he expected to explain the Economic Stimulus Programme.
Dr Butale asked residents to suggest issues that he could table in Parliament.
He stated that for the economy to grow, there had to be an introspection to determine the sectors that had to be revived to create employment.
He conceded that internal roads in the constituency were in a bad state, therefore needed a facelift.
He agreed with residents on the need to convert open spaces into recreational facilities.
Dr Butale said foreigners were not the only people who committed crime in his constituency.
He said some of the criminals were young Batswana.
He stated that labour laws should be stiff so as to penalise all the private companies that paid workers below minimum wage.
For his part, Gaborone City Clerk, Mr Mpho Mathe, stated that recklessness on the road was worrying as it claimed lives and damaged traffic lights, causing electrical faults, which then created an environment conducive for crime.
Mr Mathe said they had mounted speed humps on some of the roads but motorists continued to drive at high speed.
He said it was worrying that some households still used pit latrines, which he said were an eyesore which also contaminated underground water.
He cited the Tsholofelo Park borehole, which had since been suspended due to contaminated water. Ends
