Maun ready to receive roving torch

18 Jan 2016

Residents of Maun are in a jovial mood and ready to welcome the roving torch that will arrive in the village on Thursday.

The torch, which has been in the Okavango Sub-district, was handed over to residents of Tsau on Friday.

Preparations at the Maun main kgotla are on-going and as part of the preparations, the Matsaakagng regiment embarked on a project to renovate the old Mathiba kgotla where the torch would spend a night.

The torch is expected to spend three days in the village before heading to Matsaudi, Shorobe, Sankoyo, Mababe and Khwai villages respectively.

It would be handed over to Chobe District on January 26.

In an interview, one member of Matsaakgang regiment, Mr Chipaa Mohiemang said the place was identified by the local authorities during their meetings.

He said Mathiba kgotla, which is the first Batawana kgotla, was identified because it has a rich history adding that the kgotla was over 100 years.

“We were tasked to renovate the place to make it more attractive and we managed to collect poles and re-construct it.  The project is now complete and handed over to bogosi,” he added.

Mr Mohiemang also pointed out that since the Mathiba kgotla was led by Matima regiment and Basimane Ba Kgosi, they worked under their guidance and supervision as they were a lot of things to be observed in the place.

He said they worked smoothly with other regiments hence the successful completion of the project. Just like other people, Mr Mohiemang also believes that the Roving Torch symbolised unity, peace and tranquillity among Batswana.

He said the communities are ready to welcome the torch with open arms. Ends
