05 Jan 2016

Maun police are investigating two different incidents in which two men lost their lives on New Year Eve.

Superintendent Peter Gochela said in an interview that the first incident involves an 18-year-old man who was hit by a truck at night and died on the spot in front of Fresh Exclusive Club.

He said the deceased, together with others, were welcoming the New Near by jumping onto moving vehicles and he fell down from one of the vehicles and was crushed by an oncoming truck. He said the deceased friend, who jumped onto a moving ambulance also fell and sustained minor injuries.

Still in Maun, Superintendent Gochela revealed that a 48-year-old man of Makalamabedi was found dead at a friend's house at Boseja ward on January 1. He said the deceased visited a friend and in the morning a friend went out for a piece job, leaving him sleeping.

He said around 2pm, a neighbour phoned the owner of the house informing him that the man he accommodated died in the house. Police are still trying to establish what could be the cause of his death.

At Disana ward, an 18-year-old girl was raped by a 23-year-old man around 330am. According to Superintendent Gochela, the suspect, who is a student at Maun Technical College, went into the woman's house and raped her.

He said they managed to arrest the suspect the same day and investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, Superintendent Gochela thanked residents of Maun and the surrounding villages for working closely with the police during the festive season.

He said they did not record many serious incidents besides minor offences such as house break-ins. He said residents behaved so well that there was peace during the holidays.

The police chief also explained that incidents of house break-ins have dropped as compared to last year and 2014, noting that last year they recorded 12 while in 2014 they had 25. Ends
