The Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) on Tuesday (December 15) showed its spirit of compassion to the seven bereaved families of the Matsha truck accident in monetary terms.
Senior Private Secretary to the President, Brigadier George Tlhalerwa explained that the money was contributed by all the company’s employees across the country with the company assistance.
“The money was then handed over to the President’s charity fund to facilitate its delivery to the recipients and all the affected families will be given an equal share,” he said.
Brigadier Tlhalerwa however, refused to state the amount, only saying it was a “significant amount.”
In his welcome remarks, Kgosi Makgabana Tsiane of Takatokwane where the tour of the families started appreciated the government and BTC’s gesture saying it is heartwarming to note that the assistance and support to the affected families was not just a once off thing during the peak of the tragedy.
“It is a good sign that the support continues to come even after the pain has subsided. BTC should be commended for showing the spirit of Botho that Batswana are known to offer to others during difficult times,” he said.
He said hopefully, the gesture will prompt other companies to follow suit.
Kgosi Tsiane also appreciated the fact that the support did not only come in the form of resources and money but that senior government officials showed up time and again to offer physical support.
He also said the support was invaluable more so that government and companies are facing challenges of money due to the economic recession.
For his part, Mr Otukile Lerulapula, the uncle to the deceased Joyce Tsogwane of Takatokwane also appreciated the support they have been getting from government all along even during post funeral.
He said this indicates that the whole nation was with them in their time of the misfortune. Ends
