Road users have been urged to be mindful of each other.
Speaking during a press conference in Gaborone recently, the Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Tshenolo Mabeo, has urged the public to be aware of obstructions in the road such as animals and road construction projects.
Mr Mabeo encouraged people to plan their journeys before taking off especially during the festive season.
He said in planning the journey, one should map out the trip and think about the challenges they could meet on the way such as road detours, construction and rain.He also encouraged the right state of mind, a mind free from alcohol and drugs saying that might temper with alertness on the road and their health.
He further urged road users to exercise patience and called for extra precaution on the roads.
Mr Mabeo also appealed to the public to desist from getting lifts to their destination saying they should use prescribed public transport.
“The most important thing one has to question themselves before getting a lift is if they are safe to reach their destination” he stated.
He pointed out that with a lift, one would not know if the vehicle was road worthy.
Mr Mabeo said to encourage road users, the ministry together with stakeholders had been having safety campaigns to educate and remind the public on how to behave on roads.
He further said his ministry would do whatever it takes to ensure safety in the roads.
He said they had already deployed campaign teams such as the buzz bus, speed traps, mobile courts police, ambulance, breathalysers and other stakeholders along the roads to assist with road safety. Ends
