Gaborone Lions Club members, on Saturday (December 12), donated food hampers worth over P6 000 to the elderly and less priviledged in Mmankgodi.

The donations were part of the club’s community service activities, the club president Mr Sandra Yegnaswami said.   

He said the club geared towards serving communities in need, adding that they had carried out many projects in Gaborone and the surrounding areas.

“We are here to help you, Lions Club is always ready to assist. We serve people whenever there is need,” said Mr Yegnaswami.

The Lions Club project coordinator, Mr Harish Pathak, said club members believed that they could not prosper in life unless they first served their communities.

He said Lions Club Gaborone has about 60 members ready to volunteer their time to humanitarian needs in their localities and international communities. 

Mr Pathak said they focused on programmes relating to those with problems of sight, speech, hearing as well as youth outreach, environmental issues, destitute and other societal needs.

He added that Gaborone Lions Club had been in existence for the past 45 years and has been involved in many community service initiatives.

For his part, the area Member of Parliament Major Gen Pius Mokgware commended the movement for the gesture.

He said for the country to develop, it has to cater for all including those with disabilities and the needy hence he said Gaborone Lions Club has played an important role.

The area member of parliament said the club is playing a huge role of educating and raising awareness in caring for the elderly and also preventing diseases which can lead to blindness and loss of hearing among others. 

Maj. Gen. Mokgware said there are many areas in the village that the club can assist the community with.

For instance, he said the villagers are looking for good Samaritans to connect the village borehole so that villagers would be able to draw water from and reduce water shortage in the village.

Meanwhile, the club pledged to donate a community water tank to Mmankgodi village. Ends
