Food Control Act states that any person who labels, packages, treats, sells, or advertises any food in a manner that is false, misleading or deceptive as regards its character, nature, value, substance, quality, composition, merit or safety or in contradiction of any regulations made under this Act, shall be guilty of offence, says the Assistant Minister of Health, Mr Gaotlhaetse Matlhabaphiri.
Answering a question in Parliament, Mr Matlhabaphiri said clauses 5 of pre-packaged foods regulations specifies the mandatory information to appear on the label of pre-packaged food such as name of food, list of ingredients, country of origin, batch number instruction on storage among other things.
He said these provisions apply to all pre-packaged food products including meat and meat products.
South East South MP, Mr Odirile Motlhale had asked the minister to make a statement on the packaging and labeling of meat and meat products sold in the country. ENDS
