Council to use double-cabs to transport students

07 Dec 2015

After seven students of Matsha College died in a road accident on November 13, the Southern District Council has come up with an initiative to transport students to remote areas in double-cab vehicles.

In an interview recently, the acting chief social welfare officer on behalf of the council secretary, Mr Ogoditsemang Seleme said their council has procured 12 double-cab vehicles which would transport students to areas where roads were impassable to buses and combis.

Mr Seleme stated that the council secretary's office has formed a committee which would harmonise the transportation of students.

He said they have targeted over 1 300 students in the district to be transported to their destination, adding that they have already started the process. He said most roads in the district were in a bad condition.

He said some students would be given money for bus fare to travel to places such as Mabule and Maokane.

Mr Seleme noted that the council normally used trucks to transport students.

The officer further said students with disabilities would be given special treatment.

He appealed to the private sector and parents to assist the council with private buses and combis. Mr Seleme indicated that the arrangement has affected their budget. ENDS
