Old Naledi school has housing shortage
07 Dec 2015
Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Mr Moiseraele Goya says there is shortage of institutional houses at Old Naledi Senior Secondary.
Mr Goya said whereas the school has 83 houses, there was a staff compliment of 172 employees, which comprises of 132 teaching personnel and 40 support staff.
Currently, he said there were no plans to construct additional staff houses for the school due to budgetary constraints. Instead Mr Goya said his ministry was in the process of redistributing some recently acquired houses within the South East region to all affected schools including Naledi Senior Secondary School.
The assistant minister said the ministry commits to have redistributed the houses by 28 February 2016. He therefore said there were no plans to pay housing allowance to teachers who were not allocated institutional houses since teachers were governed by the same conditions of service as the rest of the public service.
Moreover, Mr Goya said they were already benefitting from the existing housing allowance that was payable to all public service employees.
Gaborone South MP, Mr Kagiso Molatlhegi had asked if the minister was aware of the shortage of institutional housing at Naledi Secondary School and whether there were any plans to assist those teachers who were not allocated institutional houses.
He also asked the minister to state the timeline for such interventions, if any, and to state whether he would consider paying housing allowance to teachers who were not allocated institutional houses. ENDS
