The Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Shaw Kgathi says Botswana Police Service has a crime prevention strategy that is applicable throughout Botswana, including Gaborone.
Mr Kgathi said the strategy includes the normal 24 hour shift system operational in all police stations. He further said the system was augmented by targeted foot and mobile patrols in the streets of Gaborone that includes police cluster, volunteer teams, special constable’s patrols, Special Support Group reinforcement patrol teams, traffic light operation teams and surveillance teams in the malls around Gaborone.
Mr Kgathi explained that these were geared towards improving visibility in Gaborone.
He further said the police has a relationship with private security companies that deploy in Gaborone to increase surveillance and visibility with a view to deter criminality.
He also said the Botswana Police Service and the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) have a standing bilateral agreement that includes patrols in the streets of Gaborone on a regular basis and especially during the festive season.
Gaborone North MP, Mr Haskins Nkaigwa had asked the minister what was being done to increase police visibility in Gaborone and whether there were any plans to have joint patrols by the police and members of the BDF on a continuous basis. Ends
