Institute of Internal Auditors Botswana holds conference

The Institute of Internal Auditors Botswana (IIA Botswana) will hold the fifth Annual IIA Conference starting on Wednesday 11th to 13th November 2015 in Gaborone.

According to a press release from the association, the three-day conference, to be held under the theme Sustainable Governance Environment: The Role of Internal Audit, will be officially opened by the Permanent Secretary to the President, Mr Carter Morupisi.

According to IIA Botswana acting chief executive officer, Mr James Tinarwo, the conference is an annual flagship event that brings together local, regional and international internal auditors to discuss issues relevant to the internal audit profession and its stakeholders.

It states that at the conference the president of the African Federation of Institutes of Internal Auditors (AFIIA) Parity Twinomujuni will make a presentation on the role of internal audit in effective governance.

It further says the presentation is expected to clearly define and illustrate the roles of the three  lines of defense being management and the control environment on the first line, Compliance/Legal and Enterprise Risk Management on the second line and assurance by internal audit on the third line.

The release also states that Brian Watts from Deloitte will also present of the role and importance of whistle blowing.

“Whistle blowing has of late taken centre stage in Botswana as a number of organizations including district councils and parastatals have been launching tip off anonymous toll free lines as a way of helping curb the spread of corruption and economic crime,” says the release.

It says other highlights of the conference will be a presentation by the chief executive officer of the Public Enterprises Evaluation and Privatization Agency (PEEPA) Mr Kgotla Ramaphane on the relationship between internal audit and the search for good governance.

The release says the chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Statutory Bodies and State Enterprises  Mr Guma Moyo will also speak on the state of corporate governance in state owned enterprises and public institutions while the National Strategy Office will give insights on how the internal audit profession can play a critical role in directing the country’s national strategy.

“The conference is expected to end with a dinner dance on the evening of Friday 13 November 2015,” says the release.

It explains that the dinner dance which will be a cultural night will be graced, as a guest of honour, by the president of the Customary Court of Appeal- North Kgosi Christopher Masunga and the night will be spiced up with music and dance from Sereetsi and the Natives.

It also explains that IIA Botswana is an affiliate of the Institute of Internal Auditors Global, a professional non-profit making body that, among others, facilitates the promotion and development of the practice of internal auditing and assists members to obtain appropriate training and certification.
