Parental engagement important to child education

Irrespective of the social status and level of expertise, parental engagement to child education is key, Botswana Telecommunications Corporation Limited communication manager, Mr Golekanye Molapisi has said.
Speaking at the Moiyabana Primary School Prize Giving ceremony, Mr Molapisi who underscored that primary school is a foundation of human resource development, called for parental engagement to children’s education. He explained that being interested and actively engaged in their children’s school work, irrespective of the social status and level of expertise, will motivate children, improve their self-esteem as well as boost their confidence.
“I never went to English medium school but I was an A material because my parents had interest in my education,” he added.
He emphasised that to ease the teacher’s mammoth task of transforming pupils from rough diamonds to polished ones needs community participation and challenged the business community to play a meaningful role in improving education.
“Be involved at all times and let’s not wait for results for prize giving ceremony,” Mr Molapisi stated.
He encouraged teachers not to despair but have faith and initiate other means of improving results.
Principal education officer in the Serowe region. Ms Lerato Ntekola told students that they cannot achieve anything without putting effort. She told pupils that during her school days the learning conditions were worse than today but that did not deter her from working hard and improving her results.
She also challenged the community to be fully involved in children’s education and organise teacher’s prize giving events to reward their effort.
In her welcome remarks the deputy school head ,Ms Mathogonolo Gaamangwe expressed concern that there are some parents that neglect children’s education by leaving them alone in the village. Such parents, Ms Gaamangwe said spend a lot of time at the lands and cattle post. She also said they experience shortage of class rooms, among others . Ends
