Businessmen should engage in sport

Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) vice chairperson, Martin Mokgwathi has called upon the business community to be proactive in the development of sport in the country.
Mokgwathi echoed this during the Botswana Tertiary Schools Sports Association (BOTESSA) championship games at Otse Police College on April 20.
He said for the games to grow, there is need for business community members to come on board and assist in the development of sport.
Mokgwathi, who is also the University of Botswana director of sports and recreation, said there is no doubt that sport provide youth with an opportunity to grow as they interact and learn social skills.
Through sport, he said the youth have the opportunity to be groomed into role models for future generations.
He appealed to youth already active in sport to stay away from performance enhancing drugs, warning that repercussions for that could distract one’s athletic future.
Mokgwathi further applauded the BOTESSA championship games for contributing to the spirit of competition among the youth.
However he cautioned that the quest for competition should not end with the BOTESSA games.
For his part, the president of association, Jan Erasmus said the association has a challenge of preparing for the World University Games in Russia in July.
He decried that although BOTESSA has good relation with sister organisations such as Botswana Integrated Sports Association (BISA), the same could not be said about the business community.
“We still have a challenge of the corporate community partnering with us in these games, we cannot have successful games without their involvement,” he pointed out. ENDS
